Helmut Newton, a feckless, un-scholarly boy grew up to transform fashion photography.  Probably the most imitated and controversial fashion photographer of his time, Newton earned the nickname King of Kink as well as a fortune. “If a photographer says he is not a voyeur, he is an idiot,”  Newton once said.  His erotic and dream like images were like a peep through a key hole, spied moments of a heightened reality. As a person, Newton was unsurprisingly complex. A bohemian and yet very pragmatic, he insisted that he was not an intellectual and did not stand for much. Aldo Rossi Architecture

Aldo Rossi (born 1931), one of the most influential architects during the period 1972-1988, has accomplished the unusual feat of achieving international recognition in three distinct areas: theory, drawing, and architecture. In 1966 Aldo Rossi published the book The Architecture of the City, which subsequently was translated into several languages and enjoyed enormous international success. Spurning the then fashionable debates on style, Aldo Rossi instead criticized the lack of understanding of the city in current architectural practice. Aldo Rossi argued that a city must be studied and valued as something constructed over time; of particular interest are urban artifacts that with-stand the passage of time. Despite the modern movement polemics against monuments, for example. Aldo Rossi held that the city remembers its past and uses that memory through monuments; that is, monuments give structure to the city.

Marc Quinn Archaeology of Art

The Archaeology of Art sculptures are based on the forms of real shells - the most perfect pre-existing sculptural 'readymades' in our natural world. The found forms are enlarged using a 3D printer and cast in aluminium, concrete, stainless steel or bronze. Marc Quinn polishes the inside of the shells to a high sheen, contrasting with their heavily textured surfaces. Like the rings on a tree, these surfaces tell of the age and history of the object, like some kind of found structural diagram, whereas the sculpture’s highly polished, reflective insides remain in the present moment, continually reflecting the present. Architect Marcel Breuer

Designer and Architect, Marcel Breuer (1902 - 1981) can be regarded as one of the most influential and important designers of the 20th century. As a young student at the Bauhaus Weimar, Breuer, who was Hungarian by birth, caught the eye with various furniture designs inspired by the Dutch De Stijl group. In 1925, at the tender age of only 23, he “invented” tubular steel furniture, a revolutionary development, to be considered his core contribution to the history of design. Breuer’s tubular steel designs, such as the famous Wassily armchair, the Bauhaus stool, or his various cantilever chairs are representative for the design of an entire epoch, and thus comparable only with Wagenfeld’s legendary table luminaire. Capri Casa Malaparte

Casa Malaparte was envisioned and built in 1942 on the Isle of Capri by Italian journalist and writer Curzio Malaparte. He was one of the most powerful, independent and influential Italian writers of the mid-20th century. An impetuous man of letters, Curzio Malaparte fell afoul of Mussolini in 1933 and was exiled to a speck of land in the Mediterranean, banishment had a paradoxical effect on him.  Upon his release, Malaparte longed for more remoteness and seclusion.  After buying a site on Capri’s eastern coastline, Malaparte had the noted architect Adalberto Libera draw up plans for a home, but later threw them out in favor of his own vision—a stolid, prominent form, with a poetic wind break, on top a tapering exterior staircase. Today the dwelling is owned by the writer’s heirs and most easily seen by boat or by revisiting Jean-Luc Godard’s 1963 film Contempt, in which the roof provides a sunbathing venue for Brigitte Bardot.  The minimalist plinth of the timeless house in C

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was a German-American architect. Along with Walter Gropius and Le Corbusier, is widely regarded as one of the pioneering masters of Modern architecture. Mies, like many of his post War World I contemporaries, sought to establish a new architectural style that could represent modern times just as Classical and Gothic did for their era. He created an influential 20thcentury architectural style, stated with extreme clarity and simplicity.  The Farnsworth House, built by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in 1951 and located near Plano, Illinois, is one of the most famous examples of modernist domestic architecture and was considered unprecedented in its days.

Philippe Starck St Martins Lane Hotel

Philippe Starck is perhaps best known for his innovative and whimsical items such as Starck's Juicy Salif Lemon Juicer and Ghost chairs, the French designer has been a revolutionary force in hotel design since 1988.
